Grinding Of Teeth In Children
Bruxism is the non-functional grinding or clenching of teeth. This is common in children as well as adults.
The most common signs and symptoms are tooth wear, disorder in the supporting structures of the teeth, tooth hypersensitivity, tooth mobility, fractured cusps and fillings, jaw pain or stiffness especially when waking up in the morning, pain on TMJ or facial muscles, hypertrophy of the masseter muscle, headaches etc.
Common causes for grinding include presence of any respiratory allergies, intestinal parasites, subclinical nutritional deficiencies, disorders in the bite, anxiety, psychological factors etc. According to certain studies, Bruxism may be associated with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) or gastro-esophageal reflux. Bruxism can also occur without any known causes.
Treatment for the problem depends on the cause. Nutritional deficiencies, if any, need to be corrected. In case of worm infestations, they need to be treated by medication. Children should be encouraged to relax and any irregularities in the bite or occlusion also need to be treated.
