Tooth friendly foods and the “Not-so-tooth friendly” foods

The foods you eat and how often you eat them can affect the health of your teeth and gums. If you consume too many sugary sodas, sweetened fruit drinks or sticky snacks, you could be at risk for tooth decay.

Cavities occur when plaque comes into contact with sugar in the mouth, producing acid which breaks down the teeth.

Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay. Common sources of sugar in the diet include soft drinks, candies, cookies and pastries. HIDDEN SUGARS are added sugars disguised in products where you least expect to find them. They may not have “sugar” in their ingredients list but may be labelled in a different way, for eg. dextrose or modified starch. These foods cause cavities in your children’s teeth. Foods and drinks containing sugar should be limited and are best given at mealtimes (preferably once a day). Foods containing hidden sugars include ketchups, salad dressings, pasta sauces, dried fruits, cold cereals, instant oatmeal, energy bars, flavored yoghurt, flavored milk, canned fruits and juices, bread, crackers, formula feeds etc.

Encourage your child to eat more of tooth friendly diet such as cheese, apples, carrots, celery, plain yoghurt, nuts, pears etc.
