WHEN DO KIDS NEED DENTAL X-RAYS?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry(AAPD), kids with high caries risk (high risk for cavities) can have x-rays at 6-12 month intervals.

  • If a child is not at high risk, x-rays can be taken at 12-24 month intervals.
  • In other cases, if the child has a deep cavity, the pediatric dentist may do an x-ray to check the extent of decay, see the root lengths, and also determine if the infection has spread to surrounding areas. All these factors may determine the type of treatment for the child.
  • In some cases, a full mouth x-ray or OPG may be required to assess the development of jaws, and to detect the presence of any unerupted or impacted tooth.
  • So routine dental x-rays help the pediatric dentist in the correct diagnosis and treatment planning for your child.
